Jane Elton Brown – conductor

Jane graduated from Melbourne University, B.Mus., Dip.Ed., receiving the Dwight Prize in Education. She subsequently gained the degree of Master of Music (Melb.) with first class honours. Previously Music Director at MLC for 29 years, Jane is presently the Music Director at The MacRobertson Girls’ High School.

Jane has conducted performances of major choral-orchestral works including Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Carmina Burana, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, and Verdi’s Requiem, in the Melbourne Concert Hall, in St Paul’s Cathedral and in Dallas Brooks Hall, these concerts receiving resounding acclaim from full house audiences.

At MLC, Jane’s Directorship saw the planning and building of a magnificent new Music School, which opened in March 1995. In May 2001, the central area of MLC was named the Jane Elton-Brown Performance Staircase.

Since her appointment as our conductor in 2001, Jane has steered the choir through its 6th decade of choral excellence. Bringing about a new level of commitment and professionalism, Jane has led the choir in performances of Haydn’s Creation, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Faure’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria, and the like.

An experienced examiner in music, speaker/presenter at conferences and seminars, and adjudicator at eisteddfods, Jane is currently a member of the Board of the Faculty of Music at Melbourne University, a member of the Committee of Convocation at Melbourne University, and the founding music director of the Star Chorale (formerly MLC Chorale).
