Early in 1946, the Caulfield City Choir was established with Mr. David Plummer as the inaugural Music Director, a position he held for the next 29 years. Through his enduring efforts, a solid choral foundation was formed from which the choir grew and expanded, becoming one of Melbourne’s most respected amateur choral groups.

Renowned for its musicality, technique and generosity of performances, the choir has been involved in many memorable performance in and around Melbourne as well as locally where it provides support for Council’s Anzac Day Celebrations; Aged Home visits and Caulfield Hospital Carol singing at Christmas time.

With a wide and varied repertoire, the choir presents three Concerts each year, many of which are in conjunction with other choral groups and notable orchestras. Its members have sung with the RAAF Band at the Myer Music Bowl; at such performances as the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games; “Victoria Victoria” (the 150th celebrations at the Exhibition building); “Australia Australia”, for the Bicentenary celebrations; the “Berlioz” Spectacular, celebrating the Bicentenary of the French Revolution at the National Tennis Centre; Channel 9 “Carols by Candlelight” and similar, under diverse Directors since the retirement of Mr. Plummer, in 1975.

In October 1996 a function was held at Tudor Court Receptions to celebrate our fifty years of continuous and successful music-making, at which time the change of name to “Glen Eira City Choir” was formally announced.

In May 1999 the Glen Eira City Choir in association with the Box Hill Choral Society and the Orana Concert Orchestra performed “Mozart in C” – a selection of Masses. This concert was very well received and a CD recording was made of the event. A Photo of the Rehearsal can be seen here.

The success of the choir however, is not generated solely by the musical director and choristers. Being a community based group we are continually encouraged by the support from our many staunch followers together with generous financial and personal attention from the City of Glen Eira, all of which is so very important and greatly appreciated.
